Young Leaders Academy Graduate to Represent the UK

Sam Whelan, a Young Leaders Academy graduate of 2008, has been selected to represent the UK in the Frisbee World Championships.

Here Sam describes in his own words what it is like to be selected to play for his country in the World Cup.

A Dream Come True!

Quick, electric and spirited is how you would describe Ultimate Frisbee. It is an exciting, non-contact team sport played by thousands the world over that combines the best features of soccer, basketball, gridiron and netball into an elegantly simple yet fascinating and demanding game. To compete at the top level Ultimate players require individual speed, stamina and agility along with good team communication skills. Even at elite level players self referee the games, so there is a huge emphasis is on fair play and sportsmanship.

As vice captain I have represented Great Britain at both under 17’s and under 20’s, competed in the European Championships, the Baltic Championships coming 2nd in both and was voted “Most Valuable Player” of the final. My club team competed at the Junior Nationals held in Birmingham and I also play for an open age team called East Midlands Open (EMO) in the elite level of Ultimate Frisbee.

This year the Great Britain under 20’s team will be going to Vancouver during August to compete against sides from North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe in the 2008 World Championships.

As a low profile sport with limited finances I have to find my own fare for the trip. This will total around £2000 and I am asking for your help. I aim to raise money through fund raising activities, sponsorship and donations. If you are in a position to help me in any way possible please call me or drop me an email. All contributions will be gratefully received with thanks.
